Write It Do It

One partner writes build instructions; the other rebuilds a structure from those instructions alone.

What this event is about

A communication event: Writer observes a structure and writes directions; Doer builds from those directions without seeing the original.

Setup (team of 2, ~50 min; Writer brings a writing utensil only — no other materials)

Decide Writer/Doer roles early and practice both; switch roles across practices so either can compete.
Writer gets 25 minutes with the model (touch only if ES allows). No advantage to finishing early — use full time for clarity checks.
Description rules: no drawings/diagrams of the model or subsections. Numerals, words, single letters, abbreviations, punctuation, and fitting scientific symbols are OK.
Writer template: define a reference face/orientation → parts inventory (color, size, connector type) → build sequence → checkpoints for relative positions.
Spatial language drill: left/right from a named face; “above/below/through”; connector holes; stacking order — avoid ambiguous “next to.”
Doer gets 20 minutes to rebuild from text only; practice reading ahead and dry-fitting before committing connections.
Scoring awareness: points for size, color, location, orientation, connection; correct pieces past an incorrect connection still count; unused parts aren’t penalized.
Avoid Tier 2 (subsection drawing) and DQ (full model picture). Use construction-phase time as the tiebreaker incentive to finish cleanly. Timed dual practices weekly with commercial kits and cheap craft materials.

Define a coordinate system in sentence one. Ambiguous “attach the long piece” loses points.
